About
Farnborough

H2  About Farnborough

Farnborough is a town in north-east Hampshire, within Rushmoor Borough, sitting just across the county boundary from Camberley and Frimley. It is internationally known for the Farnborough International Airshow and has two railway stations – Farnborough Main, with services to London Waterloo, and Farnborough North. The town’s housing ranges from period properties to interwar and post-war family homes and more recent estates, which means extension and loft projects vary widely from street to street.

Planning Permission in Farnborough

Because Farnborough is in Hampshire, applications go to Rushmoor Borough Council, not a Surrey authority. The national rules still set the baseline

Permitted development

covers many single-storey rear extensions (3m attached, 4m detached; up to 6m and 8m under prior approval) and loft conversions up to 40m³ or 50m³. See what permitted development allows.

Thames Basin Heaths SPA

covers heathland around Farnborough. Householder extensions are rarely affected; new dwellings may need mitigation.

Farnborough Architect FAQs

Is Farnborough in Surrey or Hampshire?

Farnborough is in Hampshire, within Rushmoor Borough. It borders Surrey, which is why many Farnborough homeowners search for Surrey architects.

Yes. We prepare and submit householder and full planning applications to Rushmoor and manage the process through to decision.

Many loft conversions are permitted development, but dormers facing the road, properties in conservation areas and homes with restricted rights usually need an application. Our loft conversion guide covers the detail.

The statutory target is 8 weeks from validation. Complex or sensitive sites benefit from a pre-application enquiry first.
